On May 26, 2009, White House officials announced Justice Sonia Sotomayor as President Obama’s replacement choice. Since 1998, Sotomayor has served as a judge on the United State Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before joining the appeals court, Sotomayor served as a United States District Court judge for the Southern District of New York.

Sonia Sotomayer was born and raised in a South Bronx housing project near Yankee Stadium and as a child she was diagnosed with diabetes. Her father died when she was only 9 years old and she and her brother were raised by their mother, a nurse. Sotomayer graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976 and from Yale Law School in 1979.
If confirmed by the Senate, Judge Sotomayor would become the second woman to serve currently on the Supreme Court and only the third in history. She would be the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to serve on the high court and the second-youngest member of the court, after Chief Justice John Roberts.
